Male music journalists have often struck a slightly grubby tone when they’ve had to deal with female performers. Too many years reading liner notes and learning catalogue numbers off by heart whilst your peers were off getting tops and fingers with Sally Bennett behind the local swimming pool can obviously take a heavy toll on the delicate male psyche.
For evidence you need only look as far back as some of the more breathless recent end of year features focusing on the new wave of female electro popstars, many of which practically came with friction burns attached.
Editors wishing to keep their hacks out of A&E may wish to quickly send out for a family sized tub of vaseline, as I’m sure like ours their inboxes bulged priapically this weekend with a new hook up between the oh so buff hype Little Boots and VV Brown.
Described in our Monday morning editorial meeting as like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters, this collaborative effort will surely do nothing to allay the suspiscion that the likes of La Roux, Little Boots, etc etc all live in one big sapphic flatshare, idling the time between Guardian interviews by lounging around in their panties coquettishly fingering each other’s keyboards.
Being swordsmen of the first degree, here at Slutty Fringe we’re able to view these things in a more removed dispassionate manner and can report that the track in question ‘Leave’ is, well it’s alright really.
Nice singing, check! Bleeps and beats in all the right places, check! Essentially a pleasant enough slice of electro pop of the kind we’ve come to expect from Ms. Hesketh but unlikely to feature in either’s greatest hits box set.
Put it this way no one is going to rush out and form a band after hearing it but neither do I feel the need to apply a blowtorch to my ears, which still makes it approximately 94% better than most of the music I’ve heard this week.
