Revenge Of The Baby Sat

June 23, 2008

Whilst basking in the glory of being name checked in the current edition of Mixmag as an influential blog (props to Crookers for that and props to Oh Death for giving me the headsup) it did not escape my attention that such an august publication put young whippersnapper Lillica Libertine amongst Toddla T, Sportsday Megaphone and Miss Odd Kidd as someone to keep an eye on…

Such words as above are all that is needed to introduce Love Affair, a track from Lillica’s forthcoming EP “Glastique” on Meal Deal Records which is reminiscent of Disco – Very era Daft Punk and contains cowbell which is all that is needed to get props round here.

Lillica Libertine – Love Affair

Quick & Painful

June 23, 2008

In the West Country metropolis of Bristol, something new is stirring amongst the preponderence of the dub in step and the drum and the bass. A sound that may be affiliated with simian shanking antics. A lysergic bass heavy glitchy electro sound touching on the likes of Oizo and Siriusmo. A sound whose mascot is a nightowl called The Colonel?

Treat your ears and feet and hips to the sound of Portmanteau.

Booming In Your Jeep

Don’t really have the time to catch up on the musical mail which has been sitting in my inbox with sad puppy dog eyes whilst I was impressing American girls with my English accent in New York

however here is a excellent mixtape from Scottish DJ Boom Monk Ben that flips the script between uptempo hiphop, electropop, dubstep, r n b, d n b, the odd pop smash and more in an expert fashion.

The E Ticket

June 21, 2008

Thursday evening was spent at the This Is Music launch party where much fun was had. Wet Paint were a slightly odd choice to open proceedings with, being straight up indie rock of the variety that can be found at the Barfly any night of the week – more Wet Blanket than Paint.

Lord Skywave (otherwise known as Simon Lord – the vocal compartment of Black Ghosts) did as impressive a job of singing over music leaking out of laptop. I stand by the opinion that Lord Skywave is filling in for Jamie Liddell whilst he gets therapy for developing a Jamiroquai esque alter ego. By far my favourite track from the Lord Skywave album is Idyll (Just Like)

Lord Skywave – Idyll (Just Like)

The majority of Barringtone’s performance was missed as I was discussing the pros and cons of living in New York over a couple of cigarettes. What little I did catch was impressive – Barringtone has a single out on Monday called Snakes In The Grass produced by Jas Shaw from Simian Mobile Disco. Here is remix by Frankmusik

Barringtone – Snakes In The Grass (Barringtone Remix)

Little Boots did an impressive job of Djing inbetween bands (there was an intriguing remix of It’s The Beat amongst it all) The blonde hair is a good look too! Here is awesome Fake Blood remix of Stuck On Repeat, there is plenty of hooohaah over the identity of Fake Blood, personally my money is on Burial.

Little Boots – Stuck On Repeat (Fake Blood Remix)

In the last bout of sillyness, a Little Boots remix of Leon Jean Marie was posted and not ten minutes after that further remix shaped Leon Jean Marie produce was jettisoned in my direction – this time new single Bed of Nails with refix duties from Swedish producer Kocky. This has bass swirls and drum stomps in all the right places, sort of like a 21st century update on glam rock

Leon Jean Marie – Bed Of Nails (Kocky & Trash Dub)

Watch out for the official release with remixes from Dubsteppah Rusko and new hype beat Jack Beats (Beni g and Plus One) this Kocky remix is not being released so it’s exclusive, though it prolly is on some other blog.

Speaking of Rusko, look out for his and fellow jumpupdubstupper Caspa’s remix of old jungle classic We Are I.E. by Lennie De Ice on Y4K. This forthcoming release is home to perhaps the most chucklesome one sheet for some time and also contains exciting remixes from HiJack, breaks grandad Rennie Pilgrem and new Greco Roman signing Drums of Death which you can hear by clicking on the below words

Lennie De Ice – We Are I.E. (Drums of Death Remix)

This will all be released on 1st September, for further jungleravementalism go take a peek at the Exploding Art blog which contains the original in extended format and a Johan Filtermann funky bassline 99 style remix in high bit rate glory

Little Boots Mix

June 17, 2008

So I have just returned from a nice relaxing time in the baking heat of the East Village, NYC and have far too many emails to read – instead here is something which should have been posted weeks ago but delays for one reason or another have prevented such events.

Slutty Fringe is one of many who fell deeply in love with the Little Boots track Stuck On Repeat when it surfaced a few months back – though Slutty Fringe feels duty bound to be impressed by anything ex Dead Discoer Victoria turns her hand to.

Instead of pestering her and the label for bragging rights on the next track Meddle or the rather splendid Fake Blood remix of Stuck On Repeat, a mixtape proposal was put forward to showcase Little Boots talent for DJing (peep her myspace for the busy DJ schedule)

Luckily time was found between recording with Blamma! Blamma! and Black Ghosts and drunkenly falling out of the Old Blue after a night of playing Phil Collins at Girlcore parties to complete it. This mix has been keeping my ears company whilst my feet got lost in New York and is very impressive

Little Boots Mix Tracklist

Goldfrapp – Happiness (Beyond The Wizards Sleeve remix)
Sally Shapiro – Time To Let Go (Lindstrom remix)
Hot Chip – My Piano
Little Boots – Magical (demo version)
Charlie – Spacer Woman
Celebration – Hands Off My Gold (SMD remix)
Los Angeles TF – Magical Body
Primary 1 – Hold Me Down (The Shoes remix)
SMD – Hotdog (Cosmo Vitelli remix)
Little Boots – Stuck On Repeat (Fake Blood remix)

You can download the mix by clicking the above image or going here – as labels love information you have to submit your email to grab the file but no doubt someone with flagrant disregard for music label hunger for punter data will find a way round this….

A Little Boots bonus can be found in the shape of her remix of Leon Jean Marie‘s Bring It On which was kindly donated by Little Boots.

Leon Jean Marie – Bring It On (Little Boots Remix)

Those of you in East London on Thursday evening might want to gravitate towards the Bar and Kitchen in Hoxton Square for the launch party of new label This Is Music. There are live performances from Barringtone, Lord Skywave (Simon Lord from Black Ghosts, his self titled album is quite nice) and Wet Paint along with DJ sets by Miss Little Boots and Dave P and JDH from Fixed NYC – I will be there on the rum and ginger ales.

In a neat segue here is the Diplo remix of Black Ghosts which I found among the several hundred emails in my neglected inbox, and is much better than recent Diplodocus remix efforts of Marlena Shaw and Young MC

Black Ghosts – Repetition Kills You (Diplo Remix)

it seems Southern Fried and Backyard are partaking in a fight to see who can get the most remixes done – Black Ghosts or Chromeo, it must be standing at around 33 – 51 in favour of the Troutmann revivalists right now.
