The Real Hustle

October 30, 2007

I just noticed that Simian Mobile Disco‘s paen to teenage vinyl robbery is getting re/released on 26th November with remixes from Jesse Rose (splendid) Armand Van Helden (oof) Kevin Saunderson (nice) Roll Deep (amusing) and Shackleton from Skull Disco (intriguing)

I also noticed Witchita have decided to record a new video dropping the game of chinese whispers with some slutty fringes in favour of some podium dancing and food fucking from some oiled up Page 3 Stunnas that decides to rip off the Windowlicker video halfway through

I prefer Exhibit A! What do you think?

Would you wanna see Patti Smith in hotpants though?

October 30, 2007

I went to see Bat For Lashes at Koko the other night, now beyond an appreciative glance in recognition of Natasha Khan’s saucepottery, Bat For Lashes music hadn’t been of any sort of interest so I didn’t really know what to expect. Hey would you turn down some free tickets to a soldout gig and the chance to see if the hype was justified? Exactly

Have to say I left distinctly unimpressed by the airy fairy mysticism of Bat For Lashes music which sounded like some rehash of a Felt Mountain era Goldfrapp. The fact it was like lover’s night in Koko didn’t do much to improve the atmosphere, amount of couples swaying and sighing arm in arm along to the music whilst wearing silly masks was boke inducing.

Anyway if Bat For Lashes has passed me by then anything to do with pop minx Kylie Minogue is unlikely to register on the Slutty Fringe radar (unless she’s a reader, if so feel free to drop me an email with your thoughts on the blog Kylie) but I always welcome a surprise. And the surprise came in the form of a Studio remix of la Minogue’s new single 2 Hearts which found it’s way to my inbox.

Not really familiar with the original, I’m guessing the Balaeric lovers from Sweden have stripped the song of it’s obvious poppy disco leanings and laced her vocals over a lovely flamenco inflected smack house beat which sounds like a rubntug edit of the Gypsy Kings.

Kylie Minogue – 2 Hearts (Version by Studio)

2 Hearts is out on 5th November and you can probably buy it from your corner shop. You should also invest in the Studio album West Coast because it’s splendid and you need it in your ears.

While You Were Sleeping

I got sent a Kissy Sellout remix of The Things That Dreams Are Made Of  by original late 70/80s synth pop posers The Human League a few weeks back but it appears I lost the Cdr one drunken night DJing at the Dogstar. This week the same people responsible for that shunted some more remixes through the Slutty Fringe postbox which are mighty fine.

Legendary producer Martin Rushent has some new material out on Tirk at the moment so it would seem appropriate that his original Dub mix of the Human League’s The Things That Dreams Are Made Of is getting re/released in December and is b/w remixes by Tiga, Justus Koehncke and Ilya Santana.

I’m posting the Tiga remix cos it turns into a reet 303 burbler halfway through!

Enough Halloween related japes, White Girl Lust sent me the promo mix for their new EP West Coast Bump (available now on Beatport) days ago and dem Swedes Discobelle were fresh out of the box posting about it. I’ve no had the chance till now to feature it or anything else for that matter (apart from a sneaky Hannah Holla post in my lunch break) but this mix been playlisted on the Slutty Fringe iPod for repeat listen all week. Definitely one to bump before you head out for the night as this mix is smile inducingly excellent – especially the blaqstarr/missy bit

Download – White Girl Lust – West Coast Bump Promo Mix

WGL also sent through Go & Get It, a track from the EP featuring the vocal talents of Spoek from the excellent Sweat X and some remixes they’ve done. Nice handclaps on the Prairie Cartel refix!

White Girl Lust – Go & Get It

Prairie Cartel – Burning Down (White Girl Lust Remix)

Astra Moveo – DollFace (White Girl Lust Remix)

Finally the tracklisting for the Justeeece Fabriclive mix has just been released and I’m pleasantly suprised that it doesn’t read like the last 9 months of club music condensed into 65 minutes, which is a definite criticism of the Light Sound Dance Black Disc. The James Murphy and Pat Mahoney mix was top notch and I look forward to hearing this (next week hopefully!)

The lovely Hannah Holland sent through her latest mix with the usual dirty bass wonk (peeps need to check the new Alter Ego lp!) and in other Holland related news it appears she is embracing the interweb with both arms and giving it a hug as there is now a Batty Bass Blog and a Hannah Holland podcast to bump on your iPod

London people can catch Mizz Holland at the Get Rude Vs Batty Bass jumpoff at the Amersham Arms in Neu Rave Cross this Saturday for what is something of a stellar lineup including Monsiuer Duke of Dumont, Zombie Disco Squadski, Mama Shamone, The Real Heat and Fredski (I never thought I would see this sort of thing in New Cross!)

Anyone Know Where To Get A Macys Gift Card?

October 17, 2007

slumdrum-oct.gif

Bit of shameful self promotion to kick things off but if any London peeps is round Shoreditch way this Friday I’m playing Slumdrum at the HalfDevil with messrs Suicide Dogz, Bumps from Swallow and Joe Alexander.

It always gets a bit messy down there, for a wee taste of how we do things at SlumDrum check Pump Repeat, the latest bit of naughtiness to surface from the Bumps laboratory (under his BootySlapperz alias)

Bootyslappperz – Pump Repeat

Due to some excessive Makers Mark/rum and cake intake last Friday at the Old Queens Head I was in no fit state to do anything the next day, which meant I missed the UK debut of Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya at Club Motherfucker – needless to say they went down a storm according to reports from my friend Cuthbert *curses*

What made me feel slightly better was Bitchee sending through their recent refix of Solta O Frango by Bonde do Role which I have been meaning to check. Buy the single here (worth it for the Ladytron remix so Mira can afford to keep herself looking tidy)

Bonde Do Role – Solta O Frango (Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya Remix)

Look out next month for Fuck Friend the debut Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya release on Kitsune with some hottotrot remix action on 10 inches of vinyl.

rework.jpg

When I’m not writing sillyness here, sometimes my time is spent reviewing new music for more august publications and I get sent a right lot of new music to sift through. A few months back the fifth installment of Playhouse’s Famous When Dead compilations fell under my critical eye and got the vociferous thumbs up.

One of the standout tracks was definitely the comp opener Love Love Love Yeah by Rework which pitched a deadpan delivery by the brilliantly named Sascha Hedgehog over a sparse electro track with a buzzsaw synth.

November sees the release of Rework’s new album Pleasure Is Pretty on Berlin label Pavlek Records and Slutty Fringe got a sneak preview of some tracks which veer away from the sound of Love Love Love Yeah (included on the album) and come through with a  updated take new wave sound. A sound which very much complements the general air of confident disinterest that pervades from Miss Hedgehogs singing voice.

Rework – Check Your Vox

Hands up who actually likes the Justice remix of Klaxons? Not me, they need to low it on the Chic string samples and get back to making some nasty music. A current fine proponent of nasty bumpy house is London producer Arrow !!! whose productions graced the debut EP of Lobe Records and garnered loving reviews from the Dance Press.

Arrow !!! done gone and hooked me up with a shiny new Arrow !!! remix of Please Yourself by Machine forthcoming on Groenland Recordings along with the title track from the D.O.E.S. EP (available to buy here)

Machine – Please Yourself (Arrow !!! Remix)

Two Is Better Than One

October 15, 2007

A few weeks back Slutty Fringe was treated to a mighty fine remix of Scanners forthcoming single Raw from crazy young STDJs and now the rather special Blamma!Blamma! have graced my inbox with their own effort which is downright splendid!
The clippy house beat, which is reminiscent of the whole Dubsided sound, doesn’t really stand out until the vocal kicks in backed by some subtle vocoder action and it all makes sense. Blamma! from Blamma! Blamma! calls it a slow burner and this remix defintely shows they ain’t all about the earfucking action.

Scanners – Raw (Blamma! Blamma! Remix)

November 5th sees the release of Raw on Dim Mak with the remix action from Blamma!Blamma! and STDJs – check the Scanners Myspace for more of that info

More Blamma! Blamma! hype is just over the horizon with a sterling remix of French sex addicts The Teenagers Scarlett Johannson forthcoming on the special Merok imprint and New York label Dovecote doing the sensible thing and releasing some original B!B! material – keep em peeled son!

Other World Goodness

October 15, 2007

husky_rescue_other_world_fatdrop_resize.jpg

Husky Rescue are a favourite round these parts and next week sees the release of Other World – Remixes & Rarities, a collection of remixes, B sides and exclusive acoustic versions that have been collated over the period of their two fine albums. I count myself lucky enough to have had this album for a few weeks now and there are some cracking remixes by the likes of Vector Lovers and Serge Santiago and several of the acoustic tracks only serve to reinforce how much Reeta Leena’s vocals make my tummy funny.

To salute this release, the fine upstanding individuals at Catskills Records have sent through a previously unreleased remix of Nightless Nights by Catskills veteran Bushy which strips away all I love about the original and turns it into a nice little cowbell fused electrohouse track with a nagging synth and stretched out vocal snippets

Husky Rescue – Nightless Nights (Bushy Remix)

Further Husky Rescue related exclusive freeness can be found here with a remix of Summertime Cowboy by Mocky, Product 01’s refix of City Lights and the Deaf Stereo re/version of Diamonds In The Sky.

You can buy Other World – Remixes & Rarities from the Catskills shop from the 22nd October and it should also be available in all record shops with any sense of taste.

Hold It Down

October 14, 2007

Bit of an exclusive post at Slutty Fringe as we have a never before posted demo material from Primary One, the next artist to get a release on Phantasy Sounds, following the almighty LA Priest track Engine. Hold Me Down is out in November backed with a remix by the good mister Duke Dumont (who’s been quiet for at least a minute since his EP came out on Turbo! sort it out Duke!)

Primary One is currently working with Eeeeerol Alkannnn and Paul Phones Epworth on new material and Hold Me Down is getting big support from fancy DJs like Super Super affiliate Martelo (cop this boy’s mixtape for Red Bull Music Academy here)

Till that day come, wrap your ears around the demo version of Outside which comes on like Pharell singing over some Human League synths and a fuzzy electro squelch – a good look yo!

PrimaryOne – Outside

Cookies & Cream

October 11, 2007

Man like Plimsouls hit me up with some new tracks a while back and I’ve been bumping them on the Slutty Fringe ipod on my stumbles around London this past week or so, some really nice production going on here on a melodic 8bit electro tip. Rebecca kinda reminds me of the Joakim remix of Cut Copy with a wonky siren in place of the saxophone (on a side note we need to start a petition to get that Joakim remix released on these shores!)

Plimsouls – Rebecca

Plimsouls – Sometime Soon

Speaking of Cut Copy, Modular have just leaked a few exclusives. So Haunted is a taster of their forthcoming album (two years in the making!) along with Diamonds In The Sea, a track from the forthcoming Bumblebeeez album Prince Umberto and the Sister of Ill (Slutty Fringe loves Bumblebeez, listen to Step Back practically everyday!)

Cut Copy – So Haunted

Bumblebeez – Diamonds In The Sea

I seem to have some remixes of buffhype ed banger types Justeeece and Dj Mehdi by a mysterious producer called Chewy Chocolate Cookies on my hard drive, but can’t for the life of me remember the original source, though a quick scooby at the CCC myspace shows he’s been offering them up for download. Anyway they are all sorts of splendidness

Justice – The Party (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix)

Dj Mehdi – Saharian Break (Chewy Chocolate Cookies Remix)

Class of 92

October 11, 2007

glowstyx-l.jpg

Berlin speakerjunkers Cock Rock Disco very kindly sent through some of their new productions – very much leaning in the opposite direction to the minimal sound most associate with the city, these tracks kinda make me feel like Cock Rock Disco should be considered a transatlantic sister to labels such as Trouble & Bass and Tigerbeat06.

Glowstyx come through with a updated version of the rave sound I never listened to in my youth cos I was too busy listening to Tricky and drawing cartoons in my bedroom, its all sped up vocals, amen breaks and piano breakdowns. Whilst label boss DJ Donna Summer does all sorts of nasty things to Salt & Pepa haha

Glowstyx – Heels of Steel

Glowstyx – 7Daze

DJ Donna Summer – Push It

Check the CockRockDisco site for lots of free music and rss the CockRockDisco blog innit

Italians Do It Better

October 11, 2007

A few years back, I was lucky enough to visit Milano and DJ at a May Day Parade after party (you need to visit Milano on May Day!) but what struck me while I was there was the dominance of Dub & Dancehall, everyone bloody listened to it, which made me glad I had packed all my Soul Jazz comps haha. Saying that though I was staying with a bunch of green smoking anarchist artists.

It’s all change these days obviously with Crookers remixing all and sundry and an album soon come and other producers like 3isaCrowd and Love Supreme are bubbling under. More Italian hype comes in the shape of The Sample Truth, the new digital EP by Nic Sarno, out next month on ESP Records. As a little taster ESP are putting out Work (In The Club) one of the EP tracks for free. Taking a easily recognisable Missy vocal sample and cutting up the guitar riff from Beck’s Loser over a nice bumpy house beat, it’s obvious this would go down well on the dancefloor

Nic Sarno – Work (In The Club)

You can also sample Nic Sarno’s talents as a DJ with a mix he put together recently whilst on the road djing in everywhere from Ibeeeza to Dublin

Supermayer – Two of Us (Nic Rebeat)

Boys Noyze – & Down

Kate Wax – Cash on Time (Dave the Hustler rmx)

Felix Da Housecat – Like Something for Porno (Teenage Bad Girl rmx)

Puzique – Suite 9

Nic Sarno – Elephant

Smith & Hack – Funkytule

Midnight & Juggernauts – Road to Recovery (Dim rmx)

Midnight Operator – Return of Zombie Bikers

Don Rimini – Let Me Back Up (Crookers Tetsujin Mix)

Golden Bug – We Love Tokio

Boosta feat. Skin – ? (Crookers Crunk Edit)

Chemical Brothers – The Salmon Dance (Herve’s rmx)

When Saint Go Machine – You Should Be Someone Else (Nic Sarno rmx)

Elektrolux Family – Rock that shit

Mr. Oizo – Transexual

Chemical Brothers – Electronic Battle Weapon 8

Sygaire & Defcon – Always for the Breaks

Tim Deluxe – You Gotta Touch

Also look out the forthcoming Clark Able EP on ESP with remixes by Nic Sarno, Crookers and Hijack! Shit sounds nasteee!
