Tight Fit

December 28, 2006

As is the way round here, I did my favourites of 2006 review in a distinctly wonky fashion. I had a rather grand notion of doing some silly awards type thing, but forgot all the categories, hence the rather straight up favourite albums and tracks post.

You can find a very eloquently written and well chosen 2006 review at PopScene (especially the blog choices yo!) – For what it’s worth I reckon Discobelle and Fluokids can have a pillow fight over best music blog – Discobelle’s comments section has provided some choice humour over recent weeks especially.

Yeah so, I meant to say Dave Taylor was artist of the year – A man of many an alias and quality remixes in 2006 and has featured very heavily on Slutty Fringe since its inception. The whole ‘fidget house’ ting is kicking strong with new artists and labels popping up all over the place. It’s exciting times.

(Anyone who fancies posting me the One Week To Live issue with the fidget house feature that was out a few weeks back will get some goodies in return)

Black Ghosts – Face (Switch Remix) Out 22nd Jan check myspace for more info

Bugz In The Attic – Move Aside (A. Brucker & Sinden Remix) (YSI)

Solid Groove & Sinden – Din Da Da (YSI)

Only Freak – Can’t Get Away From Your Love (Solid Groove Remix) (YSI)

Radioclit – Mature Macho Machine (Solid Groove & Sinden Remix) (YSI)

Phonica is the best place to get all the Dubsided/Counterfeet fidget fam stuff

This year I have also been introduced to the excellent music that Drop The Lime puts out, he sent through a mix he did for Resonance FM recently and it kicks hard just like you expect it to! Props and thanks to the whole Trouble And Bass family for the excellent music and kind words of support.

Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – Cheated Hearts (Curtis Vodka Remix) (YSI)

Slutty Fringe will return in 2007, there may be some more people contributing next year as it takes up alot of time to keep it this good heheh and man like tonypoland needs to work for dollars more. Fear not as there is stringent criteria in place for those that wish to write.

If you have any suggestions on how to improve Slutty Fringe please send such thoughts in written form to me. Have a splendid New Year!

living on borrowed time….

December 18, 2006

living on borrowed time

The worst thing about writing a blog is getting home at 2am loaded on margarita and beer and feeling slightly unhinged from watching some Japanese art house porn (don’t ask) and deciding it’s the best idea to write a very narcissitic post about you being a tastemaker – well getting sent some tracks by the next Celine Dion is probably worse but doesn’t flood you with the same feelings of self loathin.

Thankfully I got writers block halfway through such a post that was meant to be about a splendid band called the Consolations but was more about how great this blog is – goddamn tequila!!

Yeah so the Consolations are this duo from Stockport, a longtime Northern hotbed of musical talent. They’ve just released an ep called Borrowed Time on Upset Zombie Records and it really is quite special.

Comprising of 6 tracks which demonstrate that there is still some room for experimentation within Indie music. Vocalist Tom Griffiths has this brilliant cynical northern drawl that somehow snugly rests on the subtle beat based arrangements of producer Matt Philbin. The production is kinda reminiscent of The Beta Band in it’s use of sampled beats which are layered with dusty lo fi-ness (or something)

I’m sticking up my two favourite tracks from the EP plus a wee exclusive demo they also sent through to me. You can get the EP for a fiver from their myspace page, go doowit!

The Consolations – Johnny

The Consolations – Gangland Love Story

The Consolations – Messages

Infants Versus Drop The Lime

December 16, 2006

infancy

Slutty Fringe favourites the Infants have just finished their remix of Drop The Lime‘s Wake Up Call and it’s deliciously unhinged – I certainly don’t know what wanky sub genre to put it under (and I like my wanky sub-genres!)

Drop The Lime – Wake Up Call (Infants Remix) [ysi]

Drop The Lime – Wake Up Call (Infants Remix) [zshare]

London based people can catch both Drop The Lime and Infants dj at Pick Up The Pieces, a new night at the half devil (333) on January the 12th – it’s an all round hefty looking lineup.

I’ve recently been liking Revl9n, a band out of Sweden (it’s mostly been Sweden or Australia with the good music this year eh?)

I got the Walking Machine remixes 12″ last week and it’s a good look what with SebastiAn, Hot Chip and Simian Mobile Disco sharing vinyl space (can’t go wrong with that really)

I also have this mstrkrft remix of Someone Like You to share which I don’t think is getting a proper release for whatever reason.

Revl9n – Someone Like You (mstrkrft remix) [ysi]

I Hate Beetroot

December 7, 2006

kania tieffer

It’s the devil’s food.

I am, however, very exited about the Adventures In The Beetroot Field party at Canvas this Saturday (I hope the Security has a short memory…) which has all manner of buff hype bands and djs playing for FREE

So for those who can’t make it for any number of reasons here’s a selection of tracks and remixes by just a handful of the acts they got crammed into 3 rooms.

Uffie – Pop The Glock (Curtis Vodka Remix 2)

ShitDisco – Reactor Party

Kissy Sellout – Saw You

M.I.A. – Sunshowers (Surkin Remix)

Missy Elliott – We Run This (Duke Dumont Remix)

Diplo vs The Beatles – Shhake It Up (erm it’s on Uppercuts which is the label run by one of Radioclit, who are djing, so there’s a real tenuous link going on here)

The Klaxons – The Bouncer (South Central Bootleg)

(I think I have leached all these tracks from other blogs haha so thankyou whoever I got them from)

Peep the full lineup at the AITBF website and I guess I’ll be seeing some you there innit

post edit: I’ve abandoned yousendit and reposted all these tracks on zshare – enjoy

Some Things Old, Some Things New

December 2, 2006

trash innit

Keep On Your Mean Side, the debut album by The Kills, has been caned these past few weeks at Slutty Fringe Towers. Back in the days when I was a till monkey in a hight street music shop, a track from that album, Fried My Little Brains worked its way into my head and didn’t leave.

I only picked up the album earlier this year but they are steadily working their way up the Slutty Fringe last fm favourite artist list. I can’t seem to get enough of their scuzzy raw rock sound. I really don’t know what their stuff since is like so if anyone wants to enlighten me I would most grateful.

The Kills – Cat Claw

The Kills – Wait

( You can purchase Keep On Your Mean Side here)

A recent discover for me has of course been The Blow, anyone unlucky enough to engage me in conversation about music has been forced to promise to invest in Paper Television.

So I was more than happy to chance upon a splendid club blend of The Blow on the low bee forum, skillfully put together by San Fran DJ Vin Sol

The Blow – Pardon Me (Vin Sol Beatnik Jive Turkey Blend)

I also saw a couple of remixes of Timberlake’s awesome My Love posted up by Hollertronix heavy Low Bee – one of which had a very funny “Your Mom’s Records For Low B Clearance” tag line running over the top of it heheh here’s the other plus the excellent Radioclit club remix

Justin Timberlake – My Love (Low B Pawtry Remix)

Justin Timberlake – My Love (Radioclit Club Remix)

On a Radioclit related note, their debut release on Counterfeet is FINALLY dropping on the 12th December – Go seek it at the usual vinyl emporiums.

And to finish some random tracks which have been making me smile recently.

Chelonis R. Jones – Na Na Na

KMD – Peachfuzz

Carl Craig – Chicken Noodle Soup

Alice & The Enemies – Touching Boys In Supermarkets
