Lip Gloss Is The Good Look

May 24, 2007

lipgloss.jpg

Unklejam seem to be having alot of money spent on them right now – from the glossy promo packaging (I didn’t want to open mine) through having Saam Farahmand directing their new single What Am I Fighting For? (I’m still hoping Saam will have a change of heart and do the StyleSlut film)

One good thing to come out of this hype is getting some rather splendid artists to remix Unklejam. Herve’s treatment of Love Ya was ze bomb yess and the powers that be have got LA Priest better known as Samuel Dust from Late Of The Pier to remix the aforementioned new single – taking it down a very daft punkesque path – check it!

Unklejam – What Am I Fighting For? (LA Priest Remix)

It’s been a short while since William Russell dropped a remix now he’s back and still on point! Teaming up with fellow Cleveland producer Stirhouse and giving the Lil Mama track Lip Gloss the low end bass treatment – this is the proper speakerjunking action!

Lil Mama – Lip Gloss (William Russell & Stirhouse Remix)

Cousin Cole sent through a lovely subtle remix of The Operation by Charlotte Gainsbourg – Big ups to Mr Cole! A quick word or two should be said to reiterate that the Flagrant Fowl EP is da bombbombbomb!

Charlotte Gainsbourg – The Operation (Cousin Cole Remix)

There’s been a surfeit of illicit/unofficial remixes of Ed Banger tracks over the months which have spread over the internet via the trusty mp3 blog – thus creating the goofy term that is blog house – DJ Discrete did a rather nice remix of Let There Be Light by Justice a while back. Now he’s tackled Ross Ross Ross by SebastiAn, giving it a bit more of a house kick and adding some tuff acidy squiggles.

SebastiAn – Ross Ross Ross (DJ Discrete’s Ross This Ross That Rerub)

Some mysterious producers called Metal On Metal sent through a remake of Datarock’s ‘I Used To Dance With My Daddy’ – I recieved no info on Metal on Metal but I like what they’ve done so enjoy!

Datarock – ‘I Used To Dance With My Daddy’ (Metal on Metal Remake)

Detroit producer Frankie Banks was kind enough to send me a track called Drip which is a cut off his forthcoming album – unfortunately my internet connection was still on a cruise to the Bahamas so I only got to hear it this week. I wish I heard it sooner yo! Proper raw club hiphop banger alert – tuff bass drops!

Frankie Banks – Drip

Identity Crisis

May 22, 2007

measured appreciation

One of the only good things about having no internets here was it meant I could dedicate some time to listening to music properly. So here’s a fat old post with some of the music I’ve been rinsing on my ipod over the past month.

Alot of musicians these days appear to delight in assuming a number of psuedonyms in order to get music out there – Switch & Herve being two prime exponents of this multiple identity trait.

That pales into insignifigance compared to Finnish artist Khan though. I’ve been liking Who Never Rests, his recently released album, for a while now and not really knowing much about him decided to do some research to make myself sound all smart when I got round to writing about his music. Turns out he’s produced music under at least 10 psuedonyms with Captain Comatose being the name I recognise the most. Crazy

Well it’s not crazy because Who Never Rests is a very accomplished album of sleazy blues art rock new wave wonky electro splendidness that sorta reminds me of a modern day Devo at times and also has shades of Hot Chip and The Chap about it. Here’s a few tracks from the album, hopefully you’ll investigate further.

Khan – Favour After Favour

Khan – Strip Down

Khan – Take It Out On Me

You can purchase Who Never Rests from Boomkat or Phonica

Speaking of Hot Chip, I’ve been giving their DJ Kicks comp some serious ears of late. It’s finally getting released next Monday and is definitely one of my favourites in the series (Any compilation that includes Positive K’s I Got A Man is gonna get my blessings)

From the opening bars of the faux 80s crooning of Grovesnor’s new single Nite Moves* through the Hot Chip DJ Kicks exclusive track My Piano, the brilliant gritty soul of the Etta James track to the eccentric lyricism of Love Affair by Noze – it’s a really good selection of diverse tracks that are mixed well (something that let down the Four Tet Dj Kicks in my opinion)

Here’s a few of my favourite tracks from the comp – on a sidenote: I picked up the EP on Output (RIP) with this Gramme track on for the princely of 25p in a MVE last week!

Gramme – Like You

Etta James & Sugar Pie Desanto – In The Basement

Noze – Love Affair

Listen to a 15 min exerpt of the mix at this rather plawsh e-card, read an interview with Hot Chip about all things Hot Chip and DJ Kicks at Pitchfork and wishlist the cd/double lp at Piccadilly

* London peeples should head to Catch this Thursday for the single launch with Grovesnor and Booji Boy High (DFA) live among others – check Hi Beat or the deetails!

Radioclit!

Finally I picked up Radioclit’s Hard Working Class Volume 1 compilation a few weeks back – mainly so I can play out their rather nicenice club rework of My Love and it came as no suprise that the remainder of the CD was quality too son!

If you like noisey electrocrunkghettobangermusic then I suggest you toddle off to the Radioclit myspace and pay the far from unreasonable bounty of £7 for your own shiny copy!

Radioclit – Nelly Ti Picou

Turbulence – Notorious (Radioclit Remix feat. Trim)

I caught a bit of Radioclit at Bugged Out at The End on Saturday and they were smashing it up in the lounge on the CDJs.

They’re playing Corsica Studios Thursday next week along with DipDipDiplo, Bonde Do Role and Skull Juice among a whole heap of others – click on the flyer below to get transported to a place with more details

Back In Business Bitches!!!

May 22, 2007

Finally Slutty Fringe Towers has the internets back up and running!

I thought it would be best to kick off with some up and coming producers from the South of England that make some rather splendid fuzzy electro rock noise about naughty things under the provocatively titled Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya and have also done some buff refixes of late.

They have already remixed the track Junior from Poney Poney who are no strangers to these pages and Office Boy, Bonde Do Role’s new record just out on Domino Records.

Their own track Fuck Friend is gonna get the remix treatment from some heavy buffhype hitters with CSS, Bonde Do Role, Mr Flash and Brodinski all getting dirty with Fuck Friend in the lab!

Tu Connais Le Chanson is my favourite track but it’s all quality here….

Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya – Fuck Friend

Poney Poney – Junior (Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya Remix)

Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya – Tu Connais le Chanson

Bonde Do Role – Office Boy (Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya Booty Remix)

p.s. I’ve just spent an hour downloading nearly two gigs worth of music that’s been sent through over the last month so it’s gonna get quite busy round the parts very soon!

La Greve General Rocklands Rave or Die Mix

May 21, 2007

The Rocklands Festival in New Cross/Deptford a few weeks back was a pretty shambolic affair – after the whole deluded bright park promising major headliners which turned out to be a figment of his overactive imagination affair, the actual event itself entailed for me lots of queueing and drinking and not that much seeing of bands.

However I won’t complain because I did catch Man Like Me do a fucken amazing set which concluded with him ripping the ceiling off the Amersham Arms which is perhaps one of the funniest things I’ve seen at a gig for some time (and believe, I was at a Deep Purple gig in Brighton a few weeks back too and that was proper jokes) The above pic demonstrates the carnage caused.

Anyway I completely missed La Greve Generale’s set which is a real shame, luckily they’ve hooked me up with a live recording of it – enjoy!

Black Ghosts Mixup

May 21, 2007

Black Ghosts

I’m sitting here trying to write a review of the new Apparat album, and not let myself get consumed with anger because I dropped my phone in a glass of coke and it’s now acting like it’s on the blob when I check my email and find I’ve been sent a splendid new mix by gothelectro types the Black Ghosts – which is all the excuse I need to put my troubles to one side and share the mix love.

Black Ghosts have been super busy remixing The Gossip, The Dykeenies, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Whip and Trabant of late (check their remix myspace) and this 30 minute mixup showcases some of these remixes along with some of their favourite tracks right now (loving that Metronomy track yo!) including the absolutely splendid re edit of Frankie Valli by Pilooski which 679 have picked and is gonna be big this summer (get it from phonica now vinyl lovers)

Some blatant self promotions and promotions for friends type runnings yo!

Friday sees the 5th anniversary of Furthur Promotions putting on parties to make girls sweat – having been responsible for mini jumpoffs in the sweatbox that is the sorely missed Asylum and moster Halloween raveups in some arches in the depths of London Bridge.

To celebrate they are taking over The Macbeth in Hoxton for the splendid Hot Sauce night and have got the Lex Recordings crew down to perform. Kid Acne is joined by the eponymous Dans Le Sac & Scroobius Pip (I’ve somehow managed to avoid mentioning them till now)

They are joined by Hot Chip favourite Grovesnor (his excellent new single Nitemoves starts off the brilliant Hot Chip DJ Kicks mix, more about that later in the week) and deck duties for the night are held by Hot Sauce residents John Power (Furthur head honcho) Ice Monster and some shiester called tonypoland….

Kania Tieffer Mix

May 8, 2007

One of the most beneficial aspects of this whole blogging thing is stumbling across absolutely crazy good artists on other websites that potentially you would never hear in your life. It was on one of my far too infrequent browses through the ever fucken excellent 20 jazz funk greats last November that I came across a writeup on Belgian musician Kania Tieffer who makes this crazy mad glitch pop and has a fondness for otters

Anyway it turned out you could download one of her EPs for nada and still can – Get it here, Saturday and Get Flunky are amazingly good! Then some friends from Radio Campus in Brussels invited Kania onto their show to do a DJ mix which thanks to the wonders of the internet I was lucky enough to catch and loved so I got in touch with her and asked her if she would like to contribute a mix to slutty fringe.

I’m very happy that she did, so here we are with a excellent, crazy, mad, decent mix under her DJ Albanie guise which full of stuff I’ve never heard of before and probably most people that read this blog. Putting Wookie noises over the chorus of Liam Lynch is a touch of genius in my books though!

Crooked Funk

May 5, 2007

My internet is still out of action – so i’m leaching the web round the missus’ cos I have a new Crookers track to share which has to be heard! Following on Sinden & Herve’s  brilliant “Tamborzuda” in the Funk Mundial series, Man Recordings have signed up the hotttt production duo from Milano for Funk Mundial#3.

Despite Phra and Bot only having two twelves to their name, their prolific productions (I have a cd of unreleased tracks by them – alll strate heat!!) and remixes have made them hot sauce among the blogging community and get mentioned in FACT magazine several times over (big up to Tom Wilson!)

The track I have from the EP is typical of the Crookers sound, it being a nasty low end take on baile funk with MC Leka dissing the size of some playboy’s package in Portuguese. The Funk Mundial #3 EP also contains Atomic Baile Boy which is probably my favourite track by the Crookers. It is released in digital format on the 18th May with the vinyl release to follow on June 15th limited to 300 copies on nattty green vinyl – check here for more info and sound samples

Crookers – Para De Graçinha feat. MC Leka (Euro Crunk Mix)

I missed the Crookers set at Fabric last month and apparently they smashed it big time – if you missed them too fear not as they are returning to sunny old London on the 18th May to play at Magic Circle alongside Sinden, Skull Juice, Zombie Disco Squad and a whole bunch of other splendid djs and bands.

Magic Circle is a new night set up by the promoters behind Sick of Nature and sees them expand operations somewhat in taking over Kings Cross überclub Egg for the night for 3 rooms of buffhype music to dance with girls with nice hair to. Check the flyer for all ze details.
